Executive Summary:

Humboldt Wings is a group of local Humboldt County hang glider and paraglider pilots that want to fly and work together to promote and encourage the safe growth of our sport.

The Ancient Past:

In the mid-1970's, a group of folks around Eureka and Arcata started hang gliding, and made the pioneer flights at Table Bluff, Mattole, and Shelter Cove. The only one left of these local brave souls is Leon Dauksa, although Rob McCaffrey also was pioneering in southern California before he moved to Humboldt. Through the 1980's and early 1990's, there were only a relatively few hang glider pilots in Humboldt County, and they stayed in touch with each other by phone. In 1993, the first paraglider pilots showed up, and by 2000 there were enough pilots to have a phone and email address list circulating.

The Brief History:

In the summer of 2003, Grant Kimble said, "There's so many of us now, we should have a club!"

The rest of us said, "Good idea, why don't you start one?"

So he did:
	Grant was elected our first president at our first meeting in February, 2004. We wound up with a club name (it wasn't all that easy, actually), a mail box, and, by September, 20+ members who were more or less active pilots or students.  Grant was working out of the area a lot by then, so he passed the reins on to vice-president David Brose, who became our next president.

In October, Humboldt Wings received official recognition from the United States Hang gliding Association, Inc. (USHGA), the membership organization that helps keep foot-launched flying relatively free of government interference, among other things , and the club was chartered by USHGA to become Club #188.

In November, we got a domain name and server, and by December, 2004, had our web site up. Webmaster currently Penguin (Gerald Myers).
