Hang Gliding and Paragliding in Humboldt County, Northern California

SITES

There are more than three flying sites in the Northern California Coastal Area, but these three have been flown enough, for enough years, to be well known and understood. Access to all of them is drive-to-launch, landowner relations are reasonable to excellent, and club members have personally flown them enough to be comfortable listing them here. There are a few inland, summer thermal site being developed in the south (private property, one has a locked gate to launch); a coastal site or two north of Arcata being explored with increasing frequency, and another remote site in the north out Highway 299 that has been flown by hang gliders in the past, but paragliders have yet to visit. Basically, plan on some coastal ridge soaring if you come to Humboldt County.

In the Summer of 1999, some out-of-area pilots came in to fly, and went to Bear Harbor without checking with any of the locals. The locals don't fly there. There are some real good reasons for that. One of the visitors died. That is one reason for this web site - to provide enough information for you to come here and have a good, safe time.
